Political pundit Scott Jennings on Friday said anti-Semitism in the US is a problem “on the left” after CNN panelists attacked former President Donald Trump’s comments that Jewish voters would bear the blame if he lost in November.
“The problem of anti-Semitism in this country is on the left. It’s not on the right,” said Jennings, a Republican strategist.
The discussion on “CNN This Morning” centered around a video of Trump speaking at an anti-Semitic event in Washington, D.C., on Thursday night.
“I say all the time that every Jew who votes for him [Vice President Kamala Harris]especially now, she or the Democratic Party needs to examine their heads,” Trump said. “The Jewish people would have a lot to do with losing if I’m at 40%.”
The three other left-leaning guests on the CNN panel called the comments an attack on the Jewish people, but Jennings dismissed their claims and blamed Democrats for allowing anti-Semitism to fester.
“Let’s talk about what’s happening on all these college campuses,” Jennings said. “Let’s talk about what’s happening on the streets of New York City.”
CNN’s Republican contributor pointed to anti-Israel protesters tearing up posters of Israeli hostages. He said that it is not “republicans who bring them down”.
Anti-Semitic incidents rose 361% in the months following the October 7 massacre by Hamas terrorists, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
“Everyone who sits at this table knows where the source of anti-Semitism is in this country,” Jennings said. “It’s not on the right.”
But the panelists argued that Trump’s comments were an attack on the Jewish people.
“So you’re saying one person who was invited to a stupid dinner party versus thousands and thousands and thousands of progressive activists in the street. Is that equivocation?” Jennings replied.
CNN anchor Kasie Hunt asked why Trump tried to compete for voters by “criticizing” Jews.
Jennings responded that Trump’s comment was an “open call” to voters who dislike the Democratic party’s language and policies toward Israel.
“Well, he could have said that. I mean, he could have put it that way,” Hunt replied.
